Silver Skate Festival

Feb 9-19, 2024 • Laurier Park

Edmonton's longest running winter festival!

Singing Tree Installation

This installation consists of multiple strings of LED lights which, together, form a freestanding tree. Designed by Gail Ksionzyk in 2019 in response to The Singing Tree by Elizabeth Hobbs [link] and redesigned in 2021, this versatile installation can be configured in multiple ways:

  1. With the activation of a built-in microphone, the installation can dance in response to the ambient environment (trying singing to it).
  2. The tree can dance to its own internal rhythms.
  3. When accompanied by storytellers, the tree can dance along to a story as it is recounted live.
  4. The installation can play a recording of a story (or stories), dancing along with the audio as it plays.
