“Away” on Land

In the World of Away…

Once upon a time there was a land called Blasé. Everything there was dull and grey. The people of this land called themselves the Lollygaggers. They spent all their time killing time. Each and every day was just as boring as the last.

Then the gifts came.

Multicoloured fabrics in all kinds of shapes, styles, and patterns made things colourful and exciting. People wore them, played with them, and even found ways to build with them. Their lives became filled with variety.

Things seemed to get better and better.

But the gifts kept coming. The fabrics piled up until they buried everything and life became boring again. Not to be deterred, the people of Blasé rebuilt their land on top of the piles of fabrics. But eventually everything got covered again and they needed to rebuild once more. This happened so many times that the piles ended up higher than the sun! This left the land in a perpetual winter. The people found themselves frozen in a constant cycle of rebuilding, only to have everything buried again.

In our world right here…

Over the last decades, more clothing is being made and each piece is being worn fewer times. These items take energy, water, and materials to produce, transport, and sell. They then end up in landfills—including many items made of materials that take centuries to break down.

The United Nations has highlighted Life on Land and Responsible Consumption and Production as Sustainable Development Goals. Learn more here.
